You Can't Manage Time!

I know you want your life to count and make an impact for the Kingdom of God!
Therefore, how you use your time matters.  We all have the same amount of time in every day.  Over the course of our lives, we don’t know exactly how much time we will have, and once we waste our time it is gone…
Daily we face the competing demands of those who would like to dictate how we spend our time… we try to balance all the things we want to do with our time… and we find ourselves spending time on things that do not really matter.
When we think about this struggle we inevitably come to the subject of time management.  For years I thought I could manage time.  I read books on this subject, I worked on my schedule… and yet I was still frustrated.
Then, I read a book that changed my thinking on this subject completely, “The Power of Full Engagement.”  This book challenged me to think about how I was managing my energy not my time.  You see, the legacy we leave and the impact we make with our lives is a result of the significant actions that we take.
[Tweet “Our legacy is the result of the significant actions that we take.”]
These significant actions are a result of being fully engaged with a high level of energy.  Then… and only then do we take actions that get results.  Trying to maximize every minute of the day without being mindful of our energy levels is a dead end game. We just wear ourselves out and then we are not productive… we are just busy.

“A cheerful heart is good medicine, but a broken spirit saps a person’s strength.”  – Solomon (Prov. 17:22)

Here are 5 Ways to keep Your Energy Level High

  1. Fully Engage & Fully Disengage – Every elite athlete has times of intense exertion and times of complete rest.  We are only able to achieve this if we engage and disengage.  Therefore, focus on the people or task in front of you.   Eliminate distractions, and be “all in!”
  2. Exercise – Our mental energy for the work that we do is closely tied to the physical energy of our body.  So often, rather than taking care of our body, we abuse it.  Exercise, not only strengthens our body, but it allows us to think and clear our heads.  For me, exercise is like a mental “reset” button.  If I am getting discouraged or mentally struggling, Exercise is the quickest way to bring my mind back to a good place.
  3. Feed Your Mind –  Numerous studies have shown that we are not getting proper nutrition from our diets, even if we eat healthy food.  Through year of mass food production, the nutrients in the soil have been depleted and with it the nutrition content of our fruits and vegetables.  Therefore, we need to supplement our diet with nutrition.  I specifically supplement my diet with nutrition designed to give me energy and mental focus.  This has been life transforming for me.  I can now work through the afternoon without a mental crash.  You can learn more about the products I use by clicking here.
  4. Enjoy Life – Many times in our pursuit of our goals we forget to enjoy life.  Solomon said repeatedly in the book of Ecclesiastes that our toil (work) is meaningless unless we receive the gift of God to enjoy it.  When we enjoy our lives, we gain energy.  I have activities in my life that “energize me” even though they are hard work.  I know you have the same types of activities in your life.  Make sure they are a regular part of your life.
  5. Create Margin – Nothing is designed to operate long term at max capacity.  Whether it is your vehicle engine, stereo speakers, or the hard drive on your computer… these things will fail if they are operated long term at max capacity.  So why do we think we can max out our lives and not fail under the pressure?  Start creating space.  Don’t book your day full.   Practice the Sabbath.  Take time off to rest.  It is time to simplify and create margin in our lives.

The journey to freedom from the time management “rat race” begins with a mindset and focus shift.  From there we move into the hard work of changing our habits.  Don’t get discouraged, you can do this.  You will fall back, but keep moving forward.
You now have a choice… What are you going to do with what you have learned?  You can stay on the same frustrating track of trying to manage your time or you can take action to increase your energy.  I want to help you take action and change your life.  Therefore, I have included a short list of resources to help you maintain a high level of energy in your life.

22: Town Hall – 10 Proverbs to Grow Your Business

EP. 22I believe that the Bible is one of the greatest business books of all time.  When we live by the principle of prosperity laid out in God’s word we are positioned success.
I especially love the book of Proverbs in the Bible.  It is a treasure chest of wisdom to help us be successful in business.  In today’s podcast I share 10 of my favorites.  Here is the list.

10 Proverbs to Grow Your Business

  1. Wealth from get-rich-quick schemes quickly disappears; wealth from hard work grows over time. (‭Proverbs‬ ‭13‬:‭11‬ NLT)
  2. Without oxen a stable stays clean, but you need a strong ox for a large harvest. (‭Proverbs‬ ‭14‬:‭4‬ NLT)
  3. Only simpletons believe everything they’re told! The prudent carefully consider their steps. The wise are cautious and avoid danger; fools plunge ahead with reckless confidence. (‭Proverbs‬ ‭14‬:‭15-16‬ NLT)
  4. A growing population is a king’s glory; a prince without subjects has nothing. (‭Proverbs‬ ‭14‬:‭28‬ NLT)
  5. There is treasure in the house of the godly, but the earnings of the wicked bring trouble. (‭Proverbs‬ ‭15‬:‭6‬ NLT)
  6. Plans go wrong for lack of advice; many advisers bring success. (‭Proverbs‬ ‭15‬:‭22‬ NLT)
  7. Commit your actions to the LORD, and your plans will succeed. (‭Proverbs‬ ‭16‬:‭3‬ NLT)
  8. Giving a gift can open doors; it gives access to important people! (‭Proverbs‬ ‭18‬:‭16‬ NLT)
  9. To acquire wisdom is to love yourself; people who cherish understanding will prosper. (‭Proverbs‬ ‭19‬:‭8‬ NLT)
  10. Do your planning and prepare your fields before building your house. (‭Proverbs‬ ‭24‬:‭27‬ NLT)

Does the Bible Have Anything to Say About Business?

BibleHave you ever really thought about this question?

As an entrepreneur and a former pastor, it is definitely something I have thought about.  Today, I would tell you, Absolutely YES!
However, for years, I didn’t really believe it.  I might have said that I believed the Bible could help me with my business. However, that was just in same generic way that I believed that the Bible could make me a better person.
Over the last few years, my understanding has changed.  First, if I believe that the good news of Jesus Christ can transform every area of my life, then I have to believe that it can transform my business.  Therefore, the word of God must have a lot to say about business.
With this understanding, I started to examine the word of God with a business lens to see what I could find.  The results are amazing.
Here are just a few of the nuggets I have found…

“So be careful how you live.  Don’t live like fools, but like those that are wise.  Make the most of every opportunity in these evil days.  Don’t act thoughtlessly, but understand what the Lord wants you to do.”  Ephesians 5:15-17

Live like those that are wise… make the most of opportunities… don’t act thoughtlessly…  This sounds like good business advise to me.

“When the ground soaks up the falling rain and bears a good crop for the farmer, it has God’s blessing.”  Hebrew 6:7

Business success comes from God! The farmer works but God sends the rain.

“A hard worker has plenty of food, but a person who chases fantasies ends up in poverty.  The trustworthy person will get a rich reward, but a person who wants quick riches will get into trouble.”  Proverbs 28:19-20

Get rich quick schemes result in poverty by hard work results in a reward.  This is more solid business advice.
As I have looked at the Bible through the Business lens, I have found that a lot of what the Bible has to say about business is in the wisdom of Solomon.  We read that wisdom in Ecclesiastes and Proverbs.
Therefore, I have been digging into this wisdom.  The result of this study is what I am calling “The Solomon Effect.” And, I can’t keep it all to myself.  I am excited to teach these truths in a virtual workshop that is accessible to anyone anywhere.
Solomon banner 2In this 90-minute interactive “virtual workshop,” I’m going to share with you…   “The Solomon Effect” — a series of immediately actionable principles, secrets and systems extracted from the Book of Proverbs…   tested and refined by the fire of my own real-life struggles and victories as both an entrepreneur and a pastor.
I have limited the space in the workshop so that I can interact with the participants and answer questions.  Therefore, if you would like to reserve your space, click here now.
Over the next few weeks I will be sharing more about what the Bible has to say about business.

The Simplified Office

I am excited to bring you this series from my wonderful wife Victoria Mininger of  You can’t have a great business if you are overwhelmed by the backoffice.  She has always helped me with this area of the business and now she is sharing her wisdom with you.  Enjoy!
– Brian
You might ask what a simplified office has to do with a simplified life.  Great question!
For our family, part of our journey to a simpler life is finding ways that our work does not take us away from our family.  We want to live life together, in all aspects.
For right now that means my husband is working hard to build his online business.  It allows him to work from home and home school our children.  Even though I currently work away from home, the goal is to one day be entrepreneurs together – not just me and him, but our whole family.
I know that is a dream for many of you too.  You have shared with me the desire to live a simpler life, debt free and without the confines of a 9-5 job.
However, there is still a need to earn an income for the family, which means many of you will be working to start up a small business to make that dream a reality.
But starting up a business can be daunting and overwhelming.  Where do you start? How do you find your “sweet spot”? What about the paperwork and back office systems?
Over the next few weeks I will be talking about some of these things, along with tips and helps to organize your home office.  I would love to hear your questions. What challenges do you face when it comes to simplifying your office? What is keeping you from launching into a small business? How can I help?  Feel free to comment or you can send me a message through the contact form at the top of the website.  I will be glad to share what I have learned over the years and tag team together to head you in the right direction.
Also, check out the Podcast Resource  each week specifically for the small business owner. Listen to great guests that have wonderful insight into the small business world and learning to balance life and family.

04: Find More Customers & Get More Sales – Town Hall Show

Show 4 CoverWelcome to the first Friday Town-Hall Meeting. This is the show where were answer questions, discuss the challenges of small business, sometimes have a guest, and have a little bit of fun.  In today’s episode we talk about the challenges of finding new customers and getting new sales.  Every small business needs sales, so I am going to dive deep and talk about the solutions to this challenge.
Speaking of challenges.  It was a challenging start to the week…  We had some server issues, but we were able to get the podcast off the ground.  Thank you for being a part of it.
I would like your feedback.  My desire is to serve you.  Let me know your thoughts and suggestions for the show.  You can leave them in the comments below.
These business challenges came from our reader survey that we did late last year.

Business Challenge #1  “How do I laser-focus and define my core target client persona and her/his most urgent/biggest pain points to tailor my service modules to get precisely the results they need.”

  • Profile your existing clients or determine the profile of the market you want to serve.
  • Survey
  • Sample products
  • Market before you produce and get feedback

Business Challenge #2 – “How do I connect with the right market in ways that drive new business and create sustainable relationships and income potential.”

  • Once you have identified the market, find out where they “hang out”
  • Engage them there.
  • Build connections with influencers
  • Give lots of “gifts”
  • Have a strategy and system to build those relationships over time.

Finding New Sales

  • Past customers (Sales & Referrals)
  • Consistently build connections
  • Leverage tools so that you can connect 1 to many instead of 1 to a few
  • Look for tools that foster a two way conversation not just a 1 way conversation.

The lazy person claims, “There’s a lion on the road! Yes, I’m sure there’s a lion out there!” As a door swings back and forth on its hinges, so the lazy person turns over in bed. Lazy people take food in their hand but don’t even lift it to their mouth. Lazy people consider themselves smarter than seven wise counselors. (‭Proverbs‬ ‭26‬:‭13-16‬ NLT)

Top 10 Books for Small Business Owners

Top 10 BooksI heard it said one time that “Leaders are readers!”

I am not sure who said it, but I know that it is true.  Now,  I understand that reading can take a lot of forms (you can even listen to a book), but one way or another we need to be “reading.”
When we read we stimulate our minds, learn new skills and grow ourselves.  I have loved to read ever since I was young.  I know that for some people reading is difficult.  But, with resources like and Kindle books that can be read on your smartphone, we no longer have an excuse.
Years ago when I stepped out and started my own construction company I had a problem.  My background and experience was as a “technician.”  I did not have any experience or training in running a business.  I also did not have time to “go back to school” and get a business degree.  I needed to get to work and provide for my family.  Therefore, I had to find other ways to learn how to run a business.  Reading was one of those ways I learned and developed myself.
[Tweet “To grow our businesses we must grow our leadership, to grow our leadership we must grow ourselves”]
Reading is one of the best ways to grow ourselves!
