53: 5 Benefits of Community for the Entrepreneur

Podcast – Show Notes

53: 5 Benefits of Community for the EntrepreneurHave you ever felt alone in the fight?  As Entrepreneurs, it is easy to get so busy and focused on our goals that we don’t cultivate relationship.
The result is a lonely, vulnerable place.  If you choose to stay in that place, you will find your success and impact limited.
[Tweet “”You find your calling when you find your family” – @caleb_campbell“]
However, you have a choice.  You can take action, invest in relationships and change your destiny.
Here is what Solomon had to say about community.
“This is the case of a man who is all alone, without a child or a brother, yet who works hard to gain as much wealth as he can. But then he asks himself, “Who am I working for? Why am I giving up so much pleasure now?” It is all so meaningless and depressing. Two people are better off than one, for they can help each other succeed. If one person falls, the other can reach out and help. But someone who falls alone is in real trouble. Likewise, two people lying close together can keep each other warm. But how can one be warm alone? A person standing alone can be attacked and defeated, but two can stand back-to-back and conquer. Three are even better, for a triple-braided cord is not easily broken.”

5 Benefits of Community to the Entrepreneur

  1. Someone to share success with
  2. Help when you fall
  3. Keep your hope in face of opposition
  4. Conquer the enemy
  5. Makes you stronger

39: Starting a Business from 1 Gumball Machine w/ Matt Miller

EP. 39Today’s guest is Matt Miller of School Spirit Vending.
“The School Spirit Vending concept was developed in July of 2007 by Matt Miller of Kingwood, TX.
As a father of three, with years of expertise in both print media and vending, Matt was able to see school fundraising from a unique, outsider’s perspective.
One day, after a child in the neighborhood came by the house selling items for his school’s fundraiser, Matt decided to create a business that would help schools and their clubs or organizations raise money more simply.
Year-round, hassle-free fundraising with School Spirit Vending was born!
The School Spirit Vending concept and its simplicity has caught on so quickly that schools all over the country are already benefitting from the program with great results!!”

The Faith in the Workplace Struggle…

5434408574_599677bf1a_b

Photo Credit – Mays Business School

Have you ever struggled with how to live out your Christian faith in the workplace as a business owner?
You want to make a positive difference for the Kingdom of God. You desire to share the wonderful good news of the freedom that Jesus has brought to your life, but how do you do that in an effective way.
In today’s world it seems like there is more and more opposition to living our faith openly in the workplace.  And yet… we know that Jesus did most of his miracles and ministry outside of the temple.
Jesus said that we are the light of the world. He also said that a city on a hill cannot be hidden. So how are we to be that light in the marketplace, in our daily lives, out jobs, our work,  our businesses, or as entrepreneurs. How do we become that light everywhere we go?
We have a choice.  We can keep quiet and hold the wonderful good news of Jesus in, letting the people around us continue to suffer in darkness or we can find a way to communicate clearly and effectively.
[Tweet “we strive to speak in a way that is heard, received, and understood. “]
Now I am not talking about “preaching at” people.  Effective communication is defined by what the listener hears, not what we say.  Therefore, we strive to speak in a way that is heard, received, and understood.
This struggle is not unique to us.  The Apostle Paul spoke about it in 2 Corinthians 4.  He said, “we have this treasure (The good news of Jesus) in jars of Clay to show that this all surpassing power is from God and not from us.”
Sometimes I think we forget this. We think that to show God’s glory, we have to be all cleaned up, pretty, look nice and always have it together. But Paul says were jars of clay.  Clay jars are lowly vessels and the glory comes from God.
[Tweet “Be that earthen vessel so that God’s glory can be revealed”]
So this is my challenge to you today… if you want to shine the light of Jesus everywhere you go, then be real.  Be that earthen vessel so that God’s glory can be revealed.
Otherwise, it’s our own glory that were showing. When we are humble, real, authentic earthen vessels, then people are drawn to us and the power and the light of Jesus can be fulfilled in our lives.
In the same way that we couldn’t pay the price for our sins, we can’t clean up our act and show His glory. We have to throw ourselves at the mercy of the cross and allow Jesus’ power and glory to shine through us.

This above all:
To thine own self be true,
And it must follow, as the night the day,
Thou canst not then be false to any man.

 – Hamlet, Shakespeare

People are crying out for authenticity and it’s time that we gave it to them.  Have a great week.  Let the light of God’s glory shine though you. Make the difficult choice to be real and authentic with someone today.  It is ok to not be perfect.

34: Town Hall – Finding Great Team Members

EP. 34We’re gonna talk about finding good help and some strategies you can use to inspire your great help to greatness.
Managing and finding employees is at the heart of loving well. It is not impossible to find good employees.
If it’s impossible than how come other businesses do it? How do they grow? It’s not about the employees its not yourself. It’s about you and who you will you become.
Will you be the kind of leader others will want to work for?
If you don’t lead them well they will not perform well.
Leadership is influence nothing less. You can’t empower somebody, people empower themselves. Create an environment for them to empower themselves. You need to look for people who have that drive and motivation.

5 Strategies You Can Use to Build Your Team:

  1. Clearly define the position and what you need.
  2. Utilize your network to source your potential team members.
  3. Always be open to hiring quality people when they come along.
  4. Clearly write out the advantages of working for your company.
  5. Grow yourself as a leader. People follow leaders that are ahead of them.

It IS possible to find great team members.

You either have to modify your dreams or increase your skills.

To himself, he always appears to be doing both.” ~ L.P. Jacks
