"Are you Victimized or Trained by Hardship?"

HardshipThis past Sunday, I had the opportunity to Worship in Birmingham, AL with Grace & Truth Fellowship.  This was a “trip back in time” as I was a part of this church 20 years ago.
Pastor, Steve Longenecker’s message that morning really challenged me.  He talked about being trained by hardship and asked the question, “Are you victimized or trained by hardship?”
Here are my thoughts as I have been reflecting on this question…

As I reflected on this question, I decided to write out a list of ways I have been trained by hardship…  Here is the beginning of my list.

  1. To listen to God
  2. To listen to wise counsel
  3. Humility
  4. Endurance
  5. Wisdom
  6. Practice the presence of God
  7. Thankfulness
  8. Serving others
  9. Loving others
  10. To Love my wife
  11. To listen to my kids
  12. ……

I was Self-Sabotaging My Calling…

I was self-sabotaging my callingHave you ever been there… in that place where you had big visions and dreams, but you just felt stuck?  You felt like you were going around the same mountain?
On one hand, you feel like the external resistance to living your calling is great, but you also know that the greatest resistance is inside of you!
You desire to do great things, make your life count and fulfill the calling that you were created for…. but somehow you stay stuck.
Days go by, seasons go by, you have some success, but then you fall back.  Have you experienced this?  Maybe you are experiencing it now.
What happens if you stay in this place?  Will you get to the end of your life and have regrets? Or, will you get to the end of your life and know that you “left it all on the field”, gave 100% and lived for the Glory of God?
We all have a choice, each and every day about how we live.  Unfortunately, for many years, I made the choice to self-sabotage my success and my calling…
Now, this was not a conscious choice… instead it was a choice brought on by apathy and neglect.  It is not easy for me to admit this.  On the outside, things looked good, but on the inside I was struggling.
Here is what I was experiencing… I would start something new. I would have some success. Then things would get difficult. And, internally I would crumble.  I would get stressed, burn-out, and failure would come.
I would ask myself, “Why?” “Why am I back in this place?”  “Will this ever change?” Have you had those same thoughts?
Then, about 2 years ago, God started leading me on a journey.  It was a journey of growth… it was also a journey of desperation.  I was tired of being stressed out, frustrated and full of internal turmoil every-time life got difficult.  I was tired of my weakness sabotaging my success.
Jim Rohn says, “Don’t wish it was easier, wish you were better. Don’t wish for less problems, wish for more skills. Don’t wish for less challenge, wish for more wisdom.”
[Tweet “”Don’t wish it were easier, wish you were better.” – Jim Rohn”]
I slowly began to realize that I had to change, I had to grow, I had to get stronger… And that journey began with stripping things away so that I could get healthy.  Somethings, God stripped away, other things I chose to let go of.  Once these things were stripped away, I began a journey to healthy strength.

Here are the 4 areas of health that have transformed my life.

  1. Emotional Health – This was a big one for me and my family.  Because I had lived “without healthy limits” for so long, my emotional health and the health of my family had really suffered.  We were burnt out, and struggling in our relationships.  Through the help of the Emotionally Healthy Leadership Resources developed by Pete Scazzaro, intensive counseling with Father’s Heart Ministries and God’s Grace, we were able to experience restoration in this area of our lives.
  2. Spiritual Health – Because I was so worn out, my relationship with God had suffered.  Therefore, it was time for me to reconnect with Him.  I began starting my day with Bible reading, Prayer and journaling.  These were habits that I had let “fall by the wayside” as life became overwhelming.  As I sought after God and His presence in my life, more than His blessings, my spirit started to come alive again.
  3. Physical Health – For years I had neglected my physical health and my body.  This neglect had resulted in a damaged back that required surgery a few years ago, weight gain and low energy levels. I could not handle difficult situations because my energy levels were constantly low and I didn’t feel good.  I struggled to get through the day.  Through changing my diet, exercising, drinking water, and nutrition supplementation I have transformed my physical health.  I am well on my way to achieving my goal weight of 190 lbs, my energy levels are good and I feel great.
  4. Financial Health – Ever since my construction company failed in bankruptcy in 2009, we have struggled financially.  We carried financial obligations from what happened, tried to maintain our old lifestyle, and hung onto things that we should have let go.  Finally, in desperation we decided to make some hard choices.  We knew we had to get our finances healthy.  Therefore, we have sold many of our belongings, leased out our farm, and started building a direct sales business with Advocare.

Emotional and spiritual health were the focus of 2014.  Physical and financial health are the focus of 2015.  I am so thankful for God’s grace and mercy along this journey.  I am thankful that He has lead us every step of the way… And I am thankful that these changes have brought about strength that allows me to stop self-sabotaging my calling when life gets difficult.
[Tweet “”If you fail under pressure, your strength is too small” – Solomon”]
Can I speak directly to you for a minute?  Maybe you see yourself in my story.  Maybe you have experienced these same struggles.  God wants to help you get healthy so that you can fulfill the greatness He created you for.
It would be easy to read this post and not change.  This journey is difficult, but it is worth it.  You don’t have to walk alone.
If you would like to experience this kind of transformation in your own life, I am here to help. Therefore, I would like to offer you a FREE no strings attached 30 minute coaching call.  Just fill out the form below and I will be in touch to schedule your call.

42: Secrets of the New Rich w/ Kevin J Donaldson

EP. 42Today’s Guest is Kevin J. Donaldson of Real Wealth Solutions (Mastermind Group) and author of “10 Secrets of the New Rich.”
“My name is Kevin Donaldson. I’m an entrepreneur, author, and business coach. I build businesses, and I build people, for a living.
There’s no question that life is tough. And when challenges come your way, there’s always an excuse to quit. I’ve been there myself–I had a rough home life, I was a poor student, and my marriage only lasted four years. And to top it all off, my first business venture plunged me into $1.2 million in debt.
But despite the challenges I faced, I was determined to succeed. And after decades of hard work and learning, I’m proud to say that I’ve broken through adversity and now enjoy a successful career. I’m a successful Internet marketer, e-book and article writer, and network marketing business coach.
And now, my goal in life is to teach as many people as I can how to turn their challenges into their own stepping stones to success. Add me to your circles and let me share with you the wisdom I’ve gleaned from decades of adversity.”

37: Town Hall – 4 Easy, Low Cost Ways to Start a Business

EP.37Biblical Entrepreneurship

“As workers who tend a fig tree are allowed to eat the fruit, so workers who protect their employer’s interests will be rewarded.” ~ Proverbs 27:18

Key Takeaways

Why everyone should have a part-time business?
Small Businesses make a massive impact on the community around us.
Trend toward freelancers / independent contractors is increasing.
If you see your employer as someone who exists to serve you, you will see your value to your employer decline. Employers allow to pay for results, not time.
“The number of contingent employees will increase worldwide or independent contraactors in the US alone contingent workers will exceed 40% of the work force by 2020…traditional full time, full benefit jobs will be harder to find… small businesses will develop their own collaborative network of contingent workers, minimizing fixed labor costs and expanding the available talent pool…Self employment, personal and micro business numbers will increase as a result of this…government will misclassify workers creating a major issue for companies of all sizes and work classification and work style will emerge as a target of intense political debate.”

Skills you will need:

  1. Understand how to manage your finances and your resources.
  2. How to take care of clients.
  3. How to find new business.
  4. How to manage your own time, energy, and yourself.

4 Easy Ways to Start a Part-Time Business

  1. Freelance service work
  2. Teach a class (Online or Offline)
  3. Join a Direct Sales Organization
  4. Make Handcrafted Items

Starting a business does not have to be a massive undertaking when you start out.

“Working for one company and expecting that that is going to be your total career is putting all your eggs in one basket.”

Take the plunge. Start something today, even if it’s small.

31: Town Hall – 4 Strategies for Entrepreneurs to Improve their Health

EP. 31In this Friday’s Town Hall Show, Victoria and I talk about the importance of our physical health in building our businesses and fulfilling the call of God on our life.

Biblical Entrepreneurship

“For to me to live is Christ, and to die is gain. But if I live in the flesh, this is the fruit of my labour: yet what I shall choose I wot not. For I am in a strait betwixt two, having a desire to depart, and to be with Christ; which is far better: Nevertheless to abide in the flesh is more needful for you.”  ~ Philippians 1: 21-24

 Key Takeaways

 Why improve your health?
“You can’t accomplish great things if your body can’t handle the strain”  Kary Oberbrunner
A study by economists in Finland studying 5000 identical twins found that those that exercised regularly earned 14-17% more than their more sedentary counterparts.  They found that those that exercised were more persistant in the face of challenges.
“The higher your energy level, the more efficient your body. The more efficient your body, the better you feel and the more you will use your talent to produce outstanding results.”
– Tony Robbins
“Exercising is like funding your 401K, shorting the contribution only shorts yourself.”
– Michael Hyatt

29: Your Best Just Got Better w/ Jason Womack

EP. 29Today’s Guest is Jason Womack, author of “Your Best Just Got Better” and founder of The Jason Womack Company.
“Jason W. Womack, MEd, MA sees the world differently. He doesn’t deny there are 24 hours in the day, but he defies low expectations for what can be accomplished in that time.
He won’t refute that life is busy, but he refuses to compromise when it comes to increasing productivity and maximizing time for the things that are most important. How does he do this? Jason is, above all, a teacher, but his teaching takes many forms: international speaker, productivity coach, and author of the business development book: Your Best Just Got Better: Work Smarter, Think Bigger, Make More, (Wiley, 2012).
His clients are more succinct in describing him: “Jason is a force of energy.”
He provides practical methods to maximize tools, systems, and processes to achieve quality work/life balance. He has worked with leaders and executives for over 16 years in the business, military and higher education sectors. He thrives on working with people who know they have more to do in life. These are the kinds of people who are already motivated and want help in achieving all that they’ve set up as goals for themselves.
Jason focuses on creating ideas that matter. He strives to improve the way leaders think about implementing solutions. He focuses in on customizing each person’s productivity and create systems that are sustainable in everyday workflow.
Jason shows that working longer hours doesn’t have to be your only choice to increase your productivity and performance. He teaches practical solutions to everyday workflow that will free you up to focus on your bigger leadership goals and projects.
Jason is the founder of Get Momentum and The Womack Company. He lives with his wife Jodi and dog Zuma in Ojai, California and is an avid bike racer and triathlete.”

Biblical Entrepreneurship

Look here, you who say, “Today or tomorrow we are going to a certain town and will stay there a year. We will do business there and make a profit.” ~ James 4:13

Key Takeaways

  • Everyday Ask Yourself 3 Questions:
  1. What can I acknowledge about today?
  2. What did I personally complete?
  3. What am I grateful for?
  • When you work with a team, talk about, “I am at my best when…” and then try to help create that environment for each other.
  • Write one thank you card every day!
  • “If I’ll meet potential halfway potential will find me.”

The harder I work the luckier I get. ~ Samuel Goldwyn

25: Town Hall – You Were Created for More!

EP. 25On today’s Town Hall meeting I share some of my story as I learned to step out of my box and pursue my true calling. I will be sharing with you six steps to help you find your own personal calling. Whether you are living your calling or aren’t quite there yet, I believe that you were created for more.
“The revitalization of small business is also a revitalization of the family.  The integration of biblical principles in today’s business as well as today’s family is much needed.  Thanks for sharing, keep up the good work.”  ~ Anthony Witt

 Biblical Entrepreneurship

“Plant your seed in the morning and keep busy all afternoon, for you do not know if profit will come from one activity or another – or maybe both.”  ~Ecclesiastes 11:6

In order for a business to be successful it is a good idea to have a business plan, but before that you need a life plan.  You need to understand what you were created to do.
  • Do you know what your life is to be about?
  • Do you know what you want your life to look like?
  • Do you know what your purpose and your calling is?
You need to build your business to serve the purposes and plans for your life, not the other way around.

Six Steps to Finding Your Calling

  1. Understand what a “calling” is – It is the unique place in God’s purpose and plan of redeeming the world and showing His glory that your were created to fill.
  2. Embrace the Journey, not the destination.
  3. Take a deep look inside.
  4. Lean into the resistance.
  5. Let go of something you are holding onto.
  6. Take action to move forward. If we aren’t moving forward, God can’t direct our steps.

You Don't Have to Leave Your Family to Go to Work!

How is that possible you ask?

For years, I did not think it was possible either.  I, just like most Americans, had been programmed to believe that the only way to earn a living was to get up everyday and “leave for work.”
Therefore, I did what I knew to do… I got a job and went to work.  Then I started my own business and functioned very much the same way. My work expanded to fit the “allotted work week” and my expenses expanded to meet what I could earn in that period of time.  The result, was a stretched thin life with no margin that resulted in me responding “busy” to anyone that asked “How are you doing?”
Family Business
I bet you have been there.  Most of us still are there.  However, this is a recent phenomenon.  For most of the history of the world people did not function this way.  They and their families worked together in “family businesses.”  Then, the industrial revolution needed people to work in the factories…  Schools were structured to prepare people for factory work and our routine changed.
In yesterday’s podcast, Tommy and I talked about Family Business, Homeschooling, and lifestyle.  As Tommy put it, “The Family is under attack!”  I believe it is possible to get off the rat-race and live differently.  Our family has committed to living simply, and working together to earn our living.  This lifestyle will provide us the margin to invest time and money in the things that really matter to us…. our relationships and making a difference in our community.
Making this a reality is not easy… even for us.  We recently made the hard decision for Victoria to put in her notice at Liberty University.  She is transitioning to join me in the business and build her own business The Simplified Office.   These decisions are hard, we prayed a lot, had peace about the decision, and have a plan… but there is still fear.
What if the business doesn’t grow?  What if the revenue doesn’t come in?  Were we crazy?   We have asked all these questions… but at the end of the day, we just know that it is worth it.
It is possible for you too.  Maybe your discouraged.  I pray that today you will see a spark of possibility that motivates you to move toward a better future.  It isn’t easy… but it is possible.  Others have done it before.
If you know someone else who needs this encouragement, please forward them this message and share the episode on social media.
Here’s to your Success!
Brian
