45: Gospel Patronage w/ John Rinehart

EP. 45Today’s show is featuring John Rinehart, author of Gospel Patrons, as he speaks at the 2014 Generous Giving Conference.
“JOHN RINEHART is a California-based writer and speaker with a degree in business from Biola University and a M.Div from Talbot School of Theology. In 2009 John and his wife set off on a 5-month trip around the world to become globally-minded Christians. Their adventure led to the unexpected discovery of the beautiful part businesspeople can play in advancing God’s kingdom.
Since then the message of Gospel Patrons has spread to business and ministry leaders around the world, helping them become radically generous and personally involved in the work of God. John currently speaks at a variety of events, conferences, and churches each year about the greatness of God and the part we can all play in the Great Commission.”

Key Takeaways

  • When God raises up a preacher or a missionary, He also raises up a patron.
  • What would’ve happened if the patron hadn’t said. “Get to work Tindell.”
  • God has a part for all of us to play. Whether it is behind the scenes or up on stage, a generational impact happens when we choose to give and nurture our talents for the good of those around us.

31: Town Hall – 4 Strategies for Entrepreneurs to Improve their Health

EP. 31In this Friday’s Town Hall Show, Victoria and I talk about the importance of our physical health in building our businesses and fulfilling the call of God on our life.

Biblical Entrepreneurship

“For to me to live is Christ, and to die is gain. But if I live in the flesh, this is the fruit of my labour: yet what I shall choose I wot not. For I am in a strait betwixt two, having a desire to depart, and to be with Christ; which is far better: Nevertheless to abide in the flesh is more needful for you.”  ~ Philippians 1: 21-24

 Key Takeaways

 Why improve your health?
“You can’t accomplish great things if your body can’t handle the strain”  Kary Oberbrunner
A study by economists in Finland studying 5000 identical twins found that those that exercised regularly earned 14-17% more than their more sedentary counterparts.  They found that those that exercised were more persistant in the face of challenges.
“The higher your energy level, the more efficient your body. The more efficient your body, the better you feel and the more you will use your talent to produce outstanding results.”
– Tony Robbins
“Exercising is like funding your 401K, shorting the contribution only shorts yourself.”
– Michael Hyatt

4 Strategies for Entrepreneurs to Improve Their Health

  1. Capitalize on their competitive nature
  2. Have a plan
  3. Build a team

28: Town Hall – Laying the Foundation of Success

EP. 28Do you desire to have success?  Success in your business, in your personal life?  Do you desire to see your wealth and impact grow?
The beginning of building anything is the foundation.  What are the foundations of a successful business and life?

Here are my core beliefs about Faith and Business.  I challenge you study the Bible for yourself to see what it has to say about business.

My Foundational beliefs about Faith and Business

  • Business, Entrepreneurship & Making Money is a Godly pursuit.
  • Wealth comes from aligning ourselves with God’s abundance principles.
  • We are no longer under the curse of “the toil of the ground.”
  • The good news of Jesus transforms all of our lives, including our work.
  • We were created to fulfill our destiny in God’s plan to redeem the world.
  • The Bible is the greatest business book of all time.
  • Revival is going to require more than 10% and a few hours on Sunday!
  • The Kingdom of God needs the entrepreneurs to come off the sidelines.
  • Faith results in a different way of doing business.
  • Faith gives us an advantage in the marketplace.

Key Takeaway

Laying Your Foundation – Grow into Your God Given Calling

“That night God appeared to Solomon and said, “What do you want? Ask, and I will give it to you!” Solomon replied to God, “You showed great and faithful love to David, my father, and now you have made me king in his place. O LORD God, please continue to keep your promise to David my father, for you have made me king over a people as numerous as the dust of the earth! Give me the wisdom and knowledge to lead them properly, for who could possibly govern this great people of yours?”

God said to Solomon, ‘Because your greatest desire is to help your people, and you did not ask for wealth, riches, fame, or even the death of your enemies or a long life, but rather you asked for wisdom and knowledge to properly govern my people— I will certainly give you the wisdom and knowledge you requested. But I will also give you wealth, riches, and fame such as no other king has had before you or will ever have in the future!'” (‭2 Chronicles‬ ‭1‬:‭7-12‬ NLT)

6 Steps to Laying the Foundation

  1. Make a sacrifice
  2. Seek God
  3. Embrace your calling
  4. Desire to serve “your” people
  5. Receive from God
  6. Grow!

25: Town Hall – You Were Created for More!

EP. 25On today’s Town Hall meeting I share some of my story as I learned to step out of my box and pursue my true calling. I will be sharing with you six steps to help you find your own personal calling. Whether you are living your calling or aren’t quite there yet, I believe that you were created for more.
“The revitalization of small business is also a revitalization of the family.  The integration of biblical principles in today’s business as well as today’s family is much needed.  Thanks for sharing, keep up the good work.”  ~ Anthony Witt

 Biblical Entrepreneurship

“Plant your seed in the morning and keep busy all afternoon, for you do not know if profit will come from one activity or another – or maybe both.”  ~Ecclesiastes 11:6

In order for a business to be successful it is a good idea to have a business plan, but before that you need a life plan.  You need to understand what you were created to do.
  • Do you know what your life is to be about?
  • Do you know what you want your life to look like?
  • Do you know what your purpose and your calling is?
You need to build your business to serve the purposes and plans for your life, not the other way around.

Six Steps to Finding Your Calling

  1. Understand what a “calling” is – It is the unique place in God’s purpose and plan of redeeming the world and showing His glory that your were created to fill.
  2. Embrace the Journey, not the destination.
  3. Take a deep look inside.
  4. Lean into the resistance.
  5. Let go of something you are holding onto.
  6. Take action to move forward. If we aren’t moving forward, God can’t direct our steps.

21: Success Through Collaboration w/ Lynne Breeden

EP. 21Today’s guest is Lynne Breeden of LTD 7 from Staunton, VA.
“Lynne Breeden’s Stunton, Va., based store has the feel of a well-executed painting brought to life by the hard work and experience of a creative visionary. Breeden opened LTD 7 on May 30, 2013, but indeed her retail history is storied and reaches back into her college days, working retail for the likes of The Limited, Lord and Taylor, and Casual Corner.
Although Breeden briefly tried her hand at banking, she soon returned to retail, helping other stores run their businesses and honing her skills in the process. In 2002 Breeden launched her first store, which specialized in dance apparel and gifts.
By 2008 she sold the store, which had gone through significant change in that time, and became a consultant for retailers seeking to enter the industry. But Breeden proved she couldn’t stay away from first-hand experience for too long as a self-describe “retail junkie” when she opened her latest and greatest concept in early 2013 to “live the dream,” as LTD stands for (“7” is a reference to the Breedens’ faith, as well as number of vendors they represent).”

To himself, he always appears to be doing both.” ~ L.P. Jacks

17: Raising Up the Next Generation w/ Dan Keiser

EP. 17Today’s Guest is Dan Keiser, architect of the Keiser Design Group located in Columbus Ohio.
My desire to become an Architect began at age 10, when asked by a friend of the family, “What do you want to be when you grow up?” Without hesitation, I said I want to be an Architect.  After experimenting with many Lego structures, I was accepted to study Architecture at Kent State University.
Another childhood dream from an early age was to start my own firm, which was realized in 1995. I love what I do and cannot imagine ever having to get a real job and going to work every day. Along with running KDG, I am a husband and father of three children. Being a Husband and Father is what brings me joy and satisfaction, but in my spare time I enjoy coaching, golfing, running, hunting and fishing.” – Dan Keiser

Key Takeaways

  • Be focused on the individual. What are their ideas, dreams, perspectives, and thoughts?
  • Surround yourself with people that will elevate you and your company.
  • Invite interaction as you work on projects. Welcome comments and feedback.
  • Focus. Have a clear vision and direction of where your headed. It will make all the difference.
  • “It’s critical to treat people correctly, even if they don’t treat you correctly.”
  • “If the dream is big enough the details really don’t matter.”

16: Town Hall – What I Learned About Rebounding From Failure

Town HallIn today’s podcast I am going to share what I learned about myself… and the recovery process of overcoming failure.  I am going to dive into my own personal journey.  This is not easy for me, but I think it is important.  We don’t talk about failure, and therefore many people suffer in silence.
I believe that through sharing my story, others who are struggling can find hope.  Maybe that person is you.  Maybe that person is a friend or family member.  (If so share this with them)  I want you to know that you are not alone.
After my construction business failed in bankruptcy in 2009, I really struggled.  I was stuck in the failure and the past and unable to move forward.  I had to learn how to start over…  but I was a wreck.  Everything I had poured myself into, and all of my hopes and dreams were dashed.  My self confidence was shot, my “good name” ruined and I was depressed.
I wondered if anyone would ever need me and if I could ever make a positive contibution again.  I wondered if I could ever provide for my family.
These were dark days.  I tried to help small businesses then, but I wasn’t in any shape to be able to do that.

Looking back, These are the three things I did to get Unstuck.

  • I paid attention to what was going on inside of me emotionally
  • I shared with friends and family who were close to me
  • I started doing something productive.  (Almost by accident)

Doing something productive got me going in a forward motion… the worst thing was sitting at home, filling out applications, and collecting unemployment. For my own morale, I needed to contribute.
This past spring I had a similar experience… I had left my job to start my own business doing construction work, so that I could figure out my path.
Then I got hurt, and we lost our income for a month and a half and it was a slow road back.  During that time, I figured out that I wanted to help people and not continue in construction.  I tried to launch an organic farm ititiative, but was unsuccessful and I had to keep searching.   But this time, I got moving much faster, I went to work with a landscape company and built from there.
We all experience failure.  Don’t quit.  The sun comes up tomorrow.  Grow as a person.  Have courage and don’t give up on your dreams.
